Iscor Steel Begins Merchant Pig Iron Production

Ambridge, Pa     ISCOR Steel in Pretoria, South Africa, began operation of a new Economy Industrial pig iron casting machine in March, 1998, becoming the newest producer in the world’s merchant pig iron market. ISCOR ended stainless steel production at the plant in July, 1997, but is continuing operation of its COREX® 1000 iron-making plant, designed and built by Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau GmbH.

The COREX® unit will now produce iron for the merchant pig export market. The new casting machine will cast 1,000 metric tons per day of iron into 7 Kg. Pigs.

Economy Industrial Corp. and VASA (Voest-Alpine Industries (SA) (Pty) Ltd.), Randburg, South Africa, supplied the casting machine to ISCOR under a cooperation agreement signed last October. Under the agreement, Economy Industrial Corp. will design and supply pig casting machines and VASA will provide project management, civil work, and supervision of installation, to allow customers in Southern Africa and surrounding countries to purchase on a "turn-key" basis.

Since 100% of ISCOR’s COREX® iron production is to be cast on a single-strand machine, the reliability and durability of the equipment is of paramount importance. Economy Industrial has a long history of producing equipment for plants where the entire output is cast on its machines, having built machines for merchant metal service for iron and ferro-alloys since 1914.

The new pig casting machine, Economy Industrial’s first installation in South Africa, will incorporate the patented process control system now in use at Mansbach Metal Co. in Ashland, KY, and USS/Kobe Steel, in Lorain, OH. The machine features an advanced automatic control system, to reduce operating cost by lowering mould consumption and reducing manning requirements. The control system also incorporates a variety of inter-locks to insure consistent, safe operation, and reduce deviations from operational errors.

Based in Linz, Austria, Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau GmbH, the parent company of Voest-Alpine Industries (SA) (Pty) Ltd, has an international reputation as one of the world’s leading metallurgical plant builders. It has a long history of innovation in products and processes for the steel industry and offers the complete spectrum of all related iron and steel making technologies from raw materials to the finished products. To date more than 750 major industrial projects in some 80 countries have been successfully completed.
